Thailand heeft de derde grootste boeddhistische bevolking ter wereld, na China en Japan, met ongeveer 64 miljoen boeddhisten. Het boeddhisme in Thailand is ook geïntegreerd geraakt met de volksreligie en de Chinese religies van de Thaise Chinese bevolking. Boeddhistische tempels in Thailand worden gekenmerkt door hoge gouden stoepa’s en de boeddhistische architectuur van Thailand is vergelijkbaar met die in andere Zuidoost-Aziatische landen, met name Cambodja en Laos, waarmee Thailand cultureel en historisch erfgoed deelt. Men neemt aan dat het boeddhisme al in 250 voor Christus, in de tijd van de Indiase keizer Ashoka, naar het huidige Thailand is gekomen. Sindsdien heeft het boeddhisme een belangrijke rol gespeeld in de Thaise cultuur en samenleving.

Buddhist temples in Thailand are characterized by tall golden stupas, and the Buddhist architecture of Thailand is similar to that in other Southeast Asian countries, particularly Cambodia and Laos, with which Thailand shares cultural and historical heritage. Buddhism is believed to have come to what is now Thailand as early as 250 BC,  in the time of Indian Emperor Ashoka. Since then, Buddhism has played a significant role in Thai culture and society.
