Candle holder Tamegroute Morocco | Tamegroute kandelaar uit Marokko – planeten, oker

44.00

Tamegroute pottery owes its unique appearance to the authentic and imperfect shapes and finish. The pottery is handmade in only one place in Morocco: the desert village of Tamegroute. In the local Berber language, Tamegroute means ‘the last place before the desert’, because shortly after the village the golden sand dunes of the Sahara begin. The clay for the Tamegroute is extracted from the banks of the River Draa and then processed according to traditional methods. The characteristic green color of the pottery is created during glazing due to the use of silicon, manganese and copper. When copper is replaced by iron oxide, the special ocher-like color is created. Tamegroute has been made since the 17th century and only seven families in the village know this craft. Through our contact with one of these families, we bring this beautiful pottery to the Netherlands.
