Alunga figure of the Bembe from the Democratic Republic of Congo
Alunga figure of the Bembe from the Democratic Republic of Congo
Dimensions: 47.5 x 19 x 18 cm.
This figure belongs to the Alunga tradition of the Bembe, a population group from Congo. The Alunga society plays an important role in the spiritual and social structure of the community. It is an exclusive community within the Bembe, where only initiates have access. The rituals and spiritual knowledge are kept secret from outsiders.
Statues like these are used in rituals to invoke magical powers, provide protection and maintain harmony within the community.
The skeletal details, such as the eye sockets, teeth and ribs, are typical of the Alunga style and symbolize the presence of spirits or ancestors. This example contains an extra, movable arm that is attached to the side. In the basket is a gourd, this could possibly serve as a ritual vessel for herbs or other things that give the image a spiritual charge.
The item is in good condition, with a single crack on the back of the head. It is not stable and needs some support.
