Antelope mask of the Bobo from Mali
Antelope mask of the Bobo from Mali
Dimensions: 67 x 16 x 17 cm.
In both Burkina Faso and Mali, such antelope masks are common. They are worn during masked dances. Animal masks represent protective forest spirits that help with the fertility of the land and the animals.
The mask contains carved symmetrical geometric motifs. Characteristic of these masks are the antlers with a forward bend and the upright ears.
The mask comes from a private collection of a Dutch collector who worked in Mali. It was bought in Mali in 1976. If interested, more information can be provided on request.
The mask is offered excluding stand. It has a repaired break at the horn (see photo).
