Antelope mask of the Bobo from Mali

Antelope mask of the Bobo from Mali

Dimensions: 73 x 21 x 22 cm.

In both Burkina Faso and Mali, such antelope masks are common. They are worn during masked dances. Animal masks represent protective forest spirits that help with the fertility of the land and the animals.

The mask contains carved symmetrical, geometric motifs.

The mask comes from a private collection of a Dutch collector who worked in Mali. It was bought in Mali in 1976. If interested, more information can be provided on request.

Please note that this item has been cherished for years and its vintage status may be visible in the form of (light) wear, patina or other age-related characteristics. We believe that these imperfections add to the charm and authenticity of the item. The mask has 2 repaired breaks at the horns (see photo). On the back, where the mask touches the face or wall, wear is visible.

The mask is offered exclusive of standard.
