Benin Bronze Plaque from Nigeria

Weight: 745 grams.
Material: patinated bronze.
The Kingdom of Benin, located in present-day Nigeria, is known for its impressive bronze art dating back to the 13th century. Benin bronzes are prized for their craftsmanship, detail, and historical significance. They often served as royal insignia, decorations for palaces and temples, and as ritual objects.
The bronzes from the ancient kingdom of Benin are traditionally made using a process known as the lost wax method, which requires both skilled craftsmanship and detailed knowledge of metalworking techniques.
The Benin bronzes consist mainly of representations of warriors, kings (called Obas) and leopards. On this plaque you see a warrior on the left and a leopard on the right. Leopards have symbolic meanings in Benin culture, including strength, power and royalty.
The item is in fair condition. In some places the bronze has disappeared, especially between the figures and the leopard on the bottom right. The bronze shows a beautiful green patina.
