Tamegroute pottery owes its unique appearance to the authentic and imperfect shapes and finish. The pottery is handmade in just one place in Morocco: the desert village of Tamegroute of the same name. In the local Berber language, Tamegroute means 'the last place before the desert', because shortly after the village the golden sand dunes of the Sahara begin. The clay for the Tameg Route is extracted from the banks of the Draa River and then processed using traditional methods. The characteristic green color of the earthenware is created during glazing by the use of silicon, manganese and copper. When copper is replaced by iron oxide, the special ocher-like color is created. Tamegroute has been made since the 17th century and only seven families in the village know this craft. Through our contact with one of these families, we bring this beautiful pottery to the Netherlands.
