Gunye Ge mask of the Dan from western Ivory Coast
Gunye Ge mask of the Dan from western Ivory Coast
Dimensions: 35 x 24 x 10 cm.
The Gunye Ge masks of the Dan people are, in contrast to their many battle masks, peaceful masks. They are used to maintain social order and peace.
Gunye Ge masks have round eye holes, sometimes with a ring around them. Dan masks also often have pronounced mouths with sometimes visible teeth, as is the case with this mask. A snake can be seen above the mouth. These are associated with wisdom and protection. This can help the wearer to resolve conflicts and maintain peace. Where you would expect the eyes of the mask, a small mask protrudes.
