Double figure of the Chamba from northeastern Nigeria

Double figure of the Chamba from northeastern Nigeria

Dimensions: 75.5 x 18 x 12.5 cm.
Weight: 3.9 kg.

The carvings of the Chamba people have many stylistic similarities with the carvings of the neighbouring Mumuye people. The figures are often elongated and simplistic or abstracted, but with expressive faces.

Double figures are made for various purposes and can refer to both twins (there are many twin births in Nigeria) and duality, as in this example which shows a man and a woman.

The statues are seen as protective objects and can be used to contact the spirits of ancestors. In Chamba cosmology, the dead (wurumbu) are seen as wise beings who live underground with supernatural powers. Therefore, they regularly ask advice from the ancestral spirits.

The item is in good condition considering its age, it has some minor signs of age and wear. It needs support to stay upright.
