Big Amazigh marriage contract

Big Amazigh marriage contract

Dimensions: 43 x 10 cm.
Provenance: This old wooden manuscript was purchased locally during an excursion to Morocco and is in fair condition. It dates from the period around 1920-1930.

Such wooden Arabic marriage contracts originally came from the Anti-Atlas region of Morocco and were used by the Amazigh (Berber) population. Due to the absence of paper, these documents were recorded on wooden panels. Some of these marriage contracts were legalized by the authorities with a stamp stating 'Control des acts' in red ink. The texts are written in Arabic, sometimes with the names of villages in Tamazight, with ink (smeg) made from goat hair.
