Mahakala mask - brown
Dimensions: 22 x 19 x 9 cm.
With hanging and carrying cord.
Mahakala is a god from both the Hindu and Buddhist traditions. Particularly in Vajrayana Buddhism (the Tibetan tradition). He is often depicted as a strong, angry deity who is worshipped as a protector of the dharma (the Buddhist teaching) and protector against evil influences. Furthermore, during Tantric rituals he represents liberation from the cycle of rebirth and the destruction of ignorance.
The appearance of Mahakala is terrifying to scare off enemies. In Nepal and Tibet, wall masks like this are therefore hung at homes or temples to protect the residents and the dharma and to scare off negative energies.
