Rattanakosin style Buddha in gilded bronze

Rattanakosin style Buddha in gilded bronze

Dimensions: 46 x 11 x 11 cm.
Period: mid 20th century.

The name Rattanakosin refers to the period 1782 - 1932 in which Thailand was ruled from the island of the same name 'Rattanakosin' in Bangkok. In 1782, kings started ruling from here to protect the then Siam from invasions from Burma. This period ended in 1932 because a military coup put an end to the absolute monarchy. The art and architecture from this period are expressed in elegant, slender, elongated and very detailed designs.

This is clearly visible in this Buddha. He is made of bronze, largely provided with old gilding. This clearly shows the detailed character of the Buddha. He is dressed in a royal robe with a wreath and crown. The elongated flame-shaped shape on the head (ushnisha) symbolizes wisdom. The Buddha stands on an octagonal pedestal of 4 levels, which are colored red at the top. An eyelet is attached to the back so that he could be fastened in a temple. This Buddha is from the second half of the 20th century.
