Old Rattanakosin from Thailand in gilded bronze

Old Rattanakosin from Thailand in gilded bronze

Dimensions: 51 x 12.5 x 12.5 cm.
Weight: 2.7 kg.

The name Rattanakosin refers to the period 1782 - 1932 in which Thailand was ruled from the island of the same name 'Rattanakosin' in Bangkok. In 1782, kings started ruling from here to protect the then Siam from invasions from Burma. This period ended in 1932 because a military coup put an end to the absolute monarchy. The art and architecture from this period are expressed in elegant, slender, elongated and very detailed designs.

This is clearly visible in this Buddha. He is made of bronze, largely provided with old gilding. This clearly shows the detailed character of the Buddha. He is dressed in a royal robe with a wreath and crown. The elongated flame-shaped shape on the head (ushnisha) symbolizes wisdom. His hands are in 'abhaya' mudra. This is a gesture of reassurance and safety. The Buddha stands on an octagonal pedestal of 4 levels. The whole is placed on a wooden base that was possibly placed underneath later. A metal label can be seen on the ankle, which shows that the Thai government has granted a license for the export.
