These are hand-sized, wooden carved figures that serve as helping spirits for the Ewe and Dangme peoples of southern Ghana.
The Aklama figures represent an ancestor or protective spirit. They are made to make contact with the personal guardian gods who can help them in times of need. Worshipping the figures can then provide protection, healing and prosperity. They are placed in shrines in homes and sometimes offerings are made to them, such as food.
