Vintage trade beads necklace from Ghana white

Vintage trade beads necklace from Ghana white

Length: 33 cm (linear).
Origin: This trade bead necklace comes from the collection of Fofana Sankoung, who was a dealer in African art (Kumasi / Amsterdam) from the 1960s onwards.

Tradebeads necklaces are a traditional form of jewelry that originates from the long history of trade and craft in West Africa, particularly Ghana. These necklaces are often made of colorful glass beads.

Trade beads were originally produced in Europe, particularly in countries such as Venice and the Netherlands. They were used as a medium of exchange for goods such as gold and ivory. In African societies, they were not only used as jewelry, but also had symbolic and social meanings, such as marking status, wealth, or tribal identity.

Ghanaian tradebeads necklaces can have different designs and patterns depending on the region, the ethnic group and the taste of the maker. Some necklaces are simple in design while others have more elaborate and intricate patterns.
